Macroeconomics

The Macroeconomics group at UCSD is an eclectic group of researchers that studies a wide variety of macroeconomics issues. Recent topics of research include:
- the impact of housing with adjustment costs on consumption behavior
- the adjustment of employment over the business cycle
- the impact of fiscal policy on the economy
- the political economy of public debt
- the impact of monetary policy on the economy
- business cycle dynamics
- why households hold both credit card debt and liquid assets
- the information content of aggregate price when firms have incomplete information
- the role of commodity money in general equilibrium

Our macroeconomics researchers employ a wide range of techniques, including cutting-edge time series analysis, empirical analysis of large cross-sectional data bases, computational methods, and pure theory. Members of our group have served on the National Science Foundation panel, as macroeconomics co-editor of the American Economic Review, and as consultants for the Federal Reserve and other government agencies. Several are Research Associates of the National Bureau of Economic Research.
In addition to less structured interaction, the macroeconomics group meets weekly for an informal macroeconomics lunch with graduate students to discuss research. The group also has one formal macroeconomic workshop each week which hosts speakers from around the country.
