Undergraduate Teaching Assistantship

An Undergraduate Instructional Apprentice (Tutor) is an upper-division student who serves as a teaching assistant in an undergraduate course under the supervision of a faculty member.

Duties of a Tutor

  • Attend all lectures
  • Hold office hours (one to two hours per week)
  • Hold two one-hour problem sections per week
  • Assist with grading of homework, papers, or exams

Minimum requirements for being a Tutor

  • Completion of at least 90 units of course work at UC San Diego
  • Completion of at least six upper-division Economics classes, including the relevant core courses
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 in Economics, and minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the course to which you are applying
  • Achievement of an "A-" or better in the requested lower division course or an "A" or "A+" for the requested upper division course

Application for Winter Quarter 2010

  • Will be accepted for review beginning 10/30/09 (WI10 schedule available on TritonLink beginning 10/30/09)
  • Must be submitted by 11/18/09
  • Download and complete the application (PDF)
    • Submit to the Economics Undergraduate Advising Office during office hours or through our mail slot
      • Attach a copy of your most current degree audit
    • Submit via email (due at midnight on 11/18/09)
      • Save file as "lastname_firstnameWI10TutorApp.pdf"
      • Email file AND a copy of your most current degree audit to the Tutor Coordinator

POLICY

Working Hours

  • Service period of employment - first week of the quarter through the end of final exam week
  • Weekly hours - 3 hours of lecture attendance; 1-2 office hours; 2 problem section hours; and varying time requirements for grading. Under no circumstances are Tutors authorized to work over 20 hours per week
  • Without exception: Tutors must carry out job responsibilities through final exam week

ECON 195 Enrollment (applies to First-time Tutors and Tutors working for academic credit):

  • Required enrollment in ECON 195, Introduction to Teaching Economics, for units
  • Ask an Economics Academic Advisor to be cleared
