FAQs on Proposed Sunset of EN30 and Reform of Business Economics

I’m currently a Business Economics student. Can I still graduate with the degree and on time?

Yes, you will be able to graduate normally and on time with a Business Economics EN30 degree. As a current Business Economics major planning to graduate in 2032 or before, you can continue with no changes to your program requirements.

Will my diploma for EN30 still say “Business Economics?”

Yes, your diploma will say “Business Economics.”

When will the EN30 major sunset for current students?

EN30 would remain in place for current students until at least June 2032 under the proposed discontinuation. Upon approval, the reformed Business Economics (ENxx) major would be available as an option to all current students.

When can I expect that students will no longer be able to declare (join) the discontinued EN30 major?

The Academic Senate’s ad hoc committee for the discontinuation of programs recommended that students have the option to declare the EN30 major through Fall 2026. Students may not have the option to declare the EN30 major after Fall 2026. (The recommendation may not be the Senate’s final decision.)

How does this affect the Business Economics minor?

The minor associated with EN30 would be discontinued together with the major. Upon approval, the reformed Business Economics (ENxx) major would also come with a new minor.

Why is the EN30 major being sunset?

The Economics Department is trying to reform Business Economics education to strengthen its focus on applying economic analysis to real-world business problems. The Department has proposed to replace the existing major (EN30) with a restructured major that would share the same name but have a new major code (ENxx). In the process of replacing the old major with the new one, the old major code EN30 would be “discontinued” or “sunset.” This step is procedural and required by campus policy when a major is being substantially restructured. Our priority is to protect current students while positioning the program for long-term strength and clarity.

What do I say to potential employers?

This change does not make your degree less valuable in any way. On the contrary, the Department’s goal is to strengthen and modernize the program while ensuring continuity for current students. The Economics Department is proud of all alumni and the degrees with which they graduated. Departments restructure their majors all the time, and sometimes major codes change as well. Employers do not pay attention to major codes.

Will I have to switch into the new Business Economics major when it’s available?

You will not have to switch majors or move into the new version of the program, unless you choose to. You may remain in your current Business Economics (EN30) major through graduation. The proposed new version of the major (ENxx) would be offered as an option to currently enrolled students, but it would not be required for students already enrolled.
