Concurrent Enrollment (CE) and University & Professional Studies (UPS) students

Concurrent Enrollment through UC San Diego Extended Studies provides the opportunity for those who are not registered UC San Diego students to enroll in UCSD courses. CE/UPS students are part of the UC San Diego community and are expected to follow University and UC-wide policies, including the Student Conduct Code and the Policy on Integrity of Scholarship

The procedures & policies laid out below are specific to the Department of Economics and apply to courses with the subject of ECON (Economics). For any questions about the Concurrent Enrollment process, please direct them to UCSD Extended Studies. Questions about courses in other departments should be sent directly to those campus departments.

ECON Undergraduate Policies

Concurrent enrollment is not guaranteed. Although we do our best to accommodate CE/UPS students, ECON courses are in high demand. It is possible that a CE/UPS student will not be approved to enroll in more than one or any ECON courses.

Concurrent enrollment approvals are contingent upon course attendance. CE/UPS students will not be approved to enroll in ECON courses they have not been attending since the first day of classes for the quarter.

Concurrent enrollment approvals will be based on: space availability, instructor approval (for graduate courses), the order in which "add" requests were received, and a review of overall departmental course enrollment numbers.

A maximum of four ECON courses per CE/UPS student will be approved per quarter. If students are offered a spot in a fifth course, they will have to drop one of the other ECON courses they were approved to add during the quarter. However, due to the high demand for ECON courses, students should not expect to be offered more than one to two ECON course approvals.

How to request ECON Course Authorization for Undergraduate Courses

The Economics Department's process for Undergraduate Courses:

  • Submit an EASy request for an Econ course. SP24 EASy requests will be made available for CE students on the first day of instruction, April 1, 2024.
  • The Department will process EASy requests beginning the Monday of Week 3 (and not before).
    • There must be no active waitlist for staff to consider processing the request.
      • IMPORTANT: EASy requests will not be approved for courses that are full, so please only submit for courses with open seats.
  • The Department will make final decisions by 3pm on Friday of Week 3. Requests will be processed in the order they were received.
  • If the request is approved by the Economics Department, it will then be routed to Extended Studies for final approval. After final approval, Extended Studies will provide further guidance on the next steps. If the request is denied, the student will not be allowed to enroll or attend the course.
