R. Robert Russell
February 17, 1938 - August 24, 2023

Robert Russell was born in Rock Springs, WY. He graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and earned a PhD in economics at Harvard University. After graduation, Robert held a faculty position at UC Santa Barbara. Robert joined the UC San Diego Economics Department in 1973 and remained until 1978. He then worked as Director of President Carter's Council on Wage and Price Stability, at the Brookings Institution, and at New York University. He returned to California in 1986 and held a chaired Distinguished Professorship in UC Riverside's Economics Department until his retirement in 2010... [read more]

Harris Franklin Bunker 
March 28, 1997 - October 19, 2021

Harris Bunker passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, after complications from an extended illness at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He had battled a rare blood disorder, aplastic anemia, and had received a stem cell transplant earlier in the year. John Conlisk 
1939 - October 22, 2021

John Conlisk was born 1939, in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Park Ridge. He
attended Notre Dame and Northwestern, graduating from the latter with a B.A. in 1961 in Economics and earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford in 1965 under the supervision of Kenneth Arrow and G. S. Maddala. He was Assistant Professor at Rice University (1964–66) and the University of Wisconsin (1966–69). John Conlisk joined the department in 1969 and retired as a Distinguished Professor in 1999.. [read more]

Ramachandra (Ramu) Ramanathan

Dr. Ramachandra (Ramu) Ramanathan, UC San Diego Economics Professor and one of the co-founding faculty members of the Economics department, passed away on November 21st. Dr. Ramanathan was born in 1936 in Madras, India. [read more]

Benjamin C. Horne 
May 26, 1980 - July 28, 2012

Benjamin Christopher Horne was born in the Appalachians. He graduated in 1998 from Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia, one of the best high schools in the U.S. Ben went on to complete his B.A. in Mathematical Economic Analysis at Rice University in 2002 before working as a United States Peace Corps volunteer for the sustainable economic development program in Kyrgyzstan. [read more]

Halbert L. White
November 19, 1950 - March 31, 2012

Halbert Lynn White, Jr. was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri.  He graduated from Southwest High in 1968 and entered Princeton University intending to major in physics. [read more] 

Dennis E. Smallwood
June 10, 1942 - July 31, 2010

Dennis Smallwood, Associate Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, died suddenly on July 31. Smallwood was born June 10, 1942, in Michigan and grew up in and around Detroit.  [read more]

Sir Clive W.J. Granger
September 4, 1934 - May 27, 2009

Longtime UC San Diego Economics Professor and Nobel Prize winner Sir Clive W. J. Granger passed away on May 27, 2009, in La Jolla, CA. We in the Department are greatly saddened by the loss of a great man and a giant in the field of Econometrics. [read more]

Walter P. Heller
