TritonEd/Canvas Course and Professor Evaluations

The Department is concerned about low response rates for the CAPE both because of the possibility of selection bias (non-random respondents means that CAPE statistics may not generalize to the entire class) and because small samples means that CAPE statistics are noisy estimates of the true parameters.

As economists we know that incentives matter. Because we want to get feedback from all of our students, we are experimenting with providing individual incentives for helping us improve our courses by administering a survey identical to the CAPE but through TritonEd.  TritonEd surveys show us whether a student has completed the survey, but not the student’s individual responses so it is impossible for us to link a student with their specific answers ever.  Filling out the CAPE does not give us the ability to reward you individually, because the CAPE system only tells us the fraction of the class which responded.

The incentive we gave to students who completed the TritonEd survey was to uploaded their final letter grade to TritonEd, which gave respondents access to their grades right away. Since the Registrar takes up to a full day to update after we submit grades, instructors were willing to put in the extra effort to cut this lag for students who were willing to help improve our instruction and courses by responding to the TritonEd survey.

Below we report the TritonEd results for the subset of our classes that have participated in this experiment.
